Leeuwarden has the ambition to become the European capital for water technology. One major step in that direction is the construction of WaterCampus Leeuwarden. On the campus, scientists, businesses and government authorities work together on innovative projects and develop new commercial activities. In addition to offices, the new building therefore includes laboratories for chemical and microbiological research.
WaterCampus Leeuwarden is both sustainable and iconic. The knowledge complex generates its own energy, and is built flexibly using renewable materials, already suitable for dismantling. These properties have earned the building the design certificate BREEAM-NL Excellent. Equally eye-catching is the fact that the louvers for the sunblinds and the forward-leaning angle of the entrance façade give the building the shape of a ship. Sweco offered advice on installation technology, fire safety, construction physics and sustainability.
