Climate change and increased urbanisation along the routes of large rivers have led to increased flood risks. It is not enough to simply strengthen dykes. The European STAR-FLOOD programme (STrengthening And Redesigning European FLOOD risk practices) investigated which other interventions are necessary, for example measures in terms of spatial planning, warning systems, evacuation plans and flood recovery plans. STAR-FLOOD brings together knowledge, and has led to studies based on questions from everyday practice.
One key objective of the study was to help governments and other stakeholders to improve the organisation of water management. Within the programme, Sweco ensured that the outcomes of the study were made available to the general public via a website, social media, abstracts, an online practical guide and a conference. The scientific results can be used both nationally and internationally.
